Pellet Smoke, Cold Smoking, Infrared Searing, and a Full Kitchen in 11 Feet 6 Inches — the Cypress Is the Outdoor Kitchen Built Around Flavor, Not Just Heat

The Sunstone Cypress is the only island in the Sunstone lineup that pairs a 40-inch pellet grill with a built-in cold smoker alongside an infrared searing station — so brisket, cheese, steaks, and sides all get the cooking method they actually deserve.

The SUNPLT40 gives you three cooking modes — pellet grilling from 200°F, searing to 700°F, and true cold smoking at ambient temperature — in a 40-inch built-in unit. Alongside it, the Ruby Series Companion Pro delivers 22,000 BTUs of infrared heat for searing, griddling, and frying, with a mini grill hood for poultry and fish. A 4.1 cu. ft. outdoor refrigerator and 21"×21" drop-in sink complete the station. This island is made up of modular components, so the exact arrangement of the components and layout of the island can be decided by the buyer. Select NG or LP above for the Companion Pro; countertop sold separately.

Smoke Low and Slow. Cold Smoke Cheese. Sear at 700°F. Then Rinse Up. All Without Leaving the Island.

The Cypress is built for cooks who think in cooking methods, not just temperatures. Here is what each station delivers.

200–700°F

40" Pellet Grill with Built-In Cold Smoker (SUNPLT40)

Three cooking modes in one 40" unit: GRILL (200–500°F) for slow-and-low cooks, SEAR (500–700°F) for high-heat finishing, and SMOKE — a separate cold-smoking mode that runs the pellets through a dedicated internal compartment and fan to produce cool smoke without raising the grill temperature. This means you can cold smoke cheese, salmon, or cured meats that would cook at normal grill heat. UL/ULC certified. 20 lb hopper. 1.7 lbs/hr fuel consumption. Runs on 120V / 485W — no gas connection needed.

22,000 BTU

Ruby Series Companion Pro Infrared GRILLER™ with Hood (SUN13CPRO + SUN13CPRO-HOOD)

Two integrated IR burners deliver 22,000 BTUs of direct infrared heat for searing steaks, griddling seafood, or frying in a deep fryer insert — all tasks the pellet grill produces smoke for but not the right surface heat. The included mini hood with analog temperature gauge and warming rack locks in moisture and smoke for chicken, fish, and slow cooks in a compact 13" station. Swap between included flavorizer racks, cooking grates, a sold-separately griddle, charcoal tray, sear rack, or commercial deep fryer to change the cooking method without changing the station.

4.1 Cu. Ft.

21" Outdoor Refrigerator (SAPFR21PRO)

When a smoke-forward cook runs four to twelve hours, you need cold storage at the island — not twenty feet away at the house. The SAPFR21PRO keeps 4.1 cubic feet of beverages, marinated proteins, and serve-ready sides cold throughout the cook. Full-depth shelves, door storage, and a soda can dispenser. Outdoor-rated; GFCI outlet required; 4–6" rear clearance.

21" × 21"

Drop-In Sink Package (B-PS21)

A zero-radius stainless sink with a 9" deep basin, hot/cold faucet, soap dispenser, cutting board, and raised cover. Included in the SBC24CDD cabinet — remove the top drawer per the install guide before cabinet assembly and the sink drops into the countertop cut-out above. A proper cleanup station at the end of a long smoke session matters.

304 SS

Snap-Together Modular Cabinet System

Eight cabinet modules — all 18-gauge 304 stainless steel — connect with Sunstone's pin-lock snap system. No welding, no masonry, no specialist tools for the cabinet structure itself. The 44" pellet grill cabinet (SAC44HGDC) includes two large utility drawers above the open firebox bay, giving you dedicated hopper pellet storage and cold-smoker pellet storage at hand. Adjustable peg-legs level the island on uneven surfaces. End panels and clip-on kick-plates finish both ends cleanly.

Deep Dive — SUNPLT40 Cold Smoker & Companion Pro

The SUNPLT40 Cold Smoker: What Makes This Grill Different from Any Other Pellet Grill in a Built-In Format

Most pellet grills produce smoke as a byproduct of their cooking heat — which means you can smoke at low temperatures, but you can't smoke without adding heat. The SUNPLT40 solves this with a separate internal cold-smoking compartment. In SMOKE mode, pellets are burned in a separate internal chamber and the resulting smoke is cooled by a fan before being pushed up into the cooking chamber — keeping the main grill at ambient temperature while delivering real smoke flavor. This is how you smoke cheese without melting it, cure salmon without cooking it, or add smoke to produce that would break down in heat. The hopper holds approximately 20 lbs of pellets and is compatible with all standard wood pellet types — mesquite, applewood, hickory, cherry, or pecan. The digital control panel sets temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit, includes a lock feature, and has three meat probe inputs for monitoring multiple proteins simultaneously. Modes: SMOKE (cold), GRILL (200–500°F), and SEAR (500–700°F). Do not run SMOKE mode simultaneously with GRILL or SEAR, and limit cold-smoking sessions to one hour at a time per the manufacturer's instruction. The grill is UL/ULC certified and draws 120V/485W from a standard grounded outlet. Unlike gas grills, no access door below the pellet grill is needed for gas connections — the only thing below the SUNPLT40 is the SAC44HGDC cabinet's utility drawers, which store pellets within reach.

The Companion Pro: A 13" Station That Replaces an Entire Second Grill

The Ruby Series Companion Pro GRILLER (SUN13CPRO) is not a side burner — it is a complete 13" grill station with two integrated IR burners, its own cooking grates, flavorizer racks, cover, and a separately mounted mini grill hood (SUN13CPRO-HOOD) that turns the station into a small enclosed grill. Out of the box, the Companion Pro comes configured with 304 stainless steel bar cooking grates and flavorizer racks for standard high-heat grilling and searing. Swap the included grates for the sold-separately solid steel griddle and you have a breakfast station or smash burger surface. Add the deep fryer insert for high-volume frying without a dedicated fryer. Install the charcoal tray for a mini charcoal sear zone. The mini hood (SUN13CPRO-HOOD) locks over the top and features an analog temperature gauge, a warming rack, and a vented back — it transforms the open burner into a small closed grill that builds flavor and moisture for poultry, fish, and slow-cooked items. All inserts are swappable between the Companion Pro and compatible Sunstone grill formats, so your accessory investment carries across platforms.

Who It's For — The Deck & Den Take
The Deck & Den Take — The Cypress is for the cook who has already decided they want smoke flavor in their cooking and wants a permanent built-in station to do it properly, not a pellet grill sitting on the patio next to the island. The cold-smoking capability is the feature that makes it genuinely different from every other island in this lineup — if that matters to you, this is the right package. A few things to plan before the island goes in: the SUNPLT40 needs a 120V GFCI outlet and 6" of rear clearance; the SUN13CPRO needs a gas connection (NG or LP per your variant selection) and a second GFCI outlet for its LED light transformer. The countertop also needs to be cut for both appliances with different cut-out dimensions — share both spec sheets with your fabricator before the slab is made. If you are installing under any covered structure, a vent hood above both appliances is required. And if you want the deep fryer or griddle inserts for the Companion Pro, order those separately when you place your island order so everything arrives at once.
  • Pitmasters and serious smoke cooks who want a permanent pellet grill in an outdoor kitchen island format — and specifically want cold-smoking capability alongside standard smoking and searing.
  • Outdoor cooks who want to smoke cheese, fish, and charcuterie without a separate cold smoker unit; the SUNPLT40's built-in cold smoker compartment handles this in the same grill that does your brisket.
  • Backyard entertainers who cook multi-method meals — slow-smoked protein on the pellet grill, a fast sear or griddle finish on the Companion Pro, cold storage for the rest, and a sink for cleanup, all in one 11-foot island run.
  • Cooks who want precise temperature control over a long cook — the SUNPLT40's digital control panel, three meat probe inputs, and consistent pellet-fed heat give more repeatability than charcoal or gas for BBQ-style long cooks.
  • Homeowners building a permanent outdoor kitchen who prefer wood-fired flavor over gas grilling as their primary cooking method and want the full island infrastructure (fridge, sink, storage) built around that primary tool.
  • DIY homeowners ready for a medium-complexity install — the snap-together cabinet system goes up without masonry or welding, but note that this island requires two separate electrical connections (SUNPLT40 and the Companion Pro transformer), a gas connection for the Companion Pro, and sink plumbing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the SUNPLT40 pellet grill use gas or propane?

Neither. The SUNPLT40 is an electric pellet grill — it runs exclusively on wood pellets and requires a 120V GFCI electrical outlet. No gas line or propane connection is needed for the pellet grill. The fuel type selected (NG or LP) in the variant selector above applies only to the Ruby Series Companion Pro GRILLER™ (SUN13CPRO), which is the gas-fired infrared station alongside the pellet grill.

What is cold smoking, and how does it work on the SUNPLT40?

Cold smoking is a method of infusing food with wood smoke at temperatures at or below approximately 150°F — low enough to smoke without cooking. The SUNPLT40 has a dedicated cold-smoker compartment at the front of the grill, separate from the main firebox. In SMOKE mode: open the cold-smoker box cover, pull out the feeder tube, add pellets, slide the tube back, close the cover, and select SMOKE on the control panel. A fan pushes cooled smoke from the compartment up into the main grill chamber. The main grill temperature does not rise in this mode. Use cold smoking for cheese, cured fish, charcuterie, or any ingredient that would change texture at cooking temperatures. Important: do not use the SMOKE function simultaneously with GRILL or SEAR mode. Limit cold-smoking sessions to one hour at a time per Sunstone's instruction manual.

Does this package include a countertop?

No — the countertop is not included. Before ordering, share both appliance cut-out dimensions with your countertop fabricator: the SUNPLT40 requires a 38-1/2"W × 17-1/8"H × 22"D cut-out with 1-3/4" corner notch-outs on both sides; the SUN13CPRO requires an 11"W × 10-1/2"H × 22"D cut-out. The two appliances have very different cut-out proportions, so confirm both with the fabricator before the slab is cut.

What are the overall dimensions and shipping weight?

The assembled island measures 138" long (11'6") × 34.5" high (without countertop) × 28.25" deep. Shipping weight is 960 lbs. The island ships freight on a pallet to the contiguous 48 states — expect curbside liftgate delivery via semi-truck. The carrier will contact you to schedule a delivery window. Have additional hands available to stage the modules before assembly.

How many electrical connections does the Cypress require?

Three outdoor GFCI outlets are needed: one for the SUNPLT40 pellet grill (120V/4.4A; connects at the back left corner of the grill), one for the SUN13CPRO light transformer (mounts to the inner wall of the SAC20CSDR cabinet and connects to the LED port on the left side of the Companion Pro), and one for the SAPFR21PRO outdoor refrigerator. Plan all three outlet locations before the island goes in and have a licensed electrician confirm they are properly rated, grounded, and GFCI-protected.

What clearances does the SUNPLT40 require for safe installation?

Per the SUNPLT40 manual: 24" minimum clearance from all combustible materials; 6" minimum clearance behind the grill for airflow; 5 feet minimum from counter top to the bottom edge of any overhead structure; 8 feet minimum from floor to the bottom edge of any overhead structure. If installed under any covered structure, a vent hood is required at a minimum of 36" above the countertop. The island structure must be non-combustible — if it is not, a grill jacket or non-combustible barrier shielding is required. Two vents in a HIGH position are required for natural gas; for liquid propane, one vent high and one vent low. The SUNPLT40 must hang free from the countertop and must not have any enclosure or shelf built below it.

What wood pellets should I use with the SUNPLT40?

Sunstone recommends B&B Wood Pellets and specifies using only premium or food-grade rated pellets — pellets free from chemical additives, binders, or accelerants. The grill is rated at 1.7 lbs/hr of pellet consumption and has a hopper capacity of approximately 20 lbs. Store pellets in a cool, dry location away from heat sources and moisture; use airtight containers; and rotate stock using older pellets first. Do not use pellets with additives, as this voids the warranty and safety certification. Do not use gasoline, lighter fluid, or kerosene in or near the pellet grill.

What inserts and accessories work with the Companion Pro?

The SUN13CPRO ships with 304 stainless steel cooking grates, flavorizer racks, and a warming rack. The following inserts are sold separately and swap into the Companion Pro: a solid steel griddle (for smash burgers, breakfast, fish), a charcoal tray and grate (for mini charcoal searing), a pro sear grilling rack, and a commercial-size deep fryer. All inserts are also cross-compatible with other supported Sunstone grill formats. Additionally, the SUN13CPRO-HOOD mini grill hood is included in this package — it installs by removing the four inside screws, aligning the hood base to the inside edge of the burner, and fastening in all four screws. Confirm the vented back is left open when the hood is placed.

How difficult is the assembly?

Assembly is rated as medium difficulty for the cabinet structure — the pin-lock snap system requires no welding or masonry, and most homeowners with confident DIY skills can complete the cabinet build in under a day. The SAC44HGDC cabinet for the pellet grill has a multi-piece assembly (four components plus arm rails and trim kit) before connecting to the rest of the island, so allow extra time for that module. Gas connection for the SUN13CPRO, plumbing for the sink, and electrical outlets for all three appliances should be handled by licensed tradespeople per local codes.

What warranties cover the Cypress island?

Sunstone Metal Products provides a limited lifetime warranty on the 304 stainless steel cabinet structure and finish. The SUNPLT40 pellet grill carries a limited lifetime warranty on stainless steel housings, hood, liners, and frames; a 3-year warranty on cooking grates, burner pot, and drip pans; and a 1-year warranty on electrical parts and components (control panel, lights, motors, ignition). The SUN13CPRO Companion Pro carries Sunstone's Ruby Series grill warranty — see the Use & Care Guide for terms. All warranties are honored directly by Sunstone Metal Products; labor is not included. Deck & Den passes through these warranties but does not warrant or fulfill them directly.

How does the Cypress compare to the Sunstone French Quarter or Hill Country?

The Cypress is the only island in the Sunstone lineup with a pellet grill and built-in cold smoker as the primary cooking station. The French Quarter (13'7") and Hill Country (13'6") both use large gas grills — the French Quarter's RUBY5BIR with infrared burner and the Hill Country's RUBY5BIR with a 24" Power Cirque side burner. If you want precise pellet-driven smoke and temperature control as your primary outdoor cooking method, the Cypress is the package designed for that. If you want a gas grill with high BTU output and fast-startup heat as the primary, the French Quarter or Hill Country are stronger choices. The Companion Pro in the Cypress gives you a secondary infrared searing and griddling station, but the Cypress does not include a traditional gas grill.

Can the SAC20CSDR door swing be changed to left?

Yes — Sunstone allows a no-cost swap to the SAC20CSDL (left-swing) at the time of order. Contact Deck & Den before purchase to request this change. Choose based on which direction best suits your island layout and traffic flow around the Companion Pro station.

What is Deck & Den's return policy on the Cypress?

Deck & Den offers a 45-day return policy on new, unused, unassembled items in original packaging. Given the size and weight of this island, please inspect the shipment carefully at delivery and note any damage on the carrier paperwork before signing. Contact Deck & Den promptly if damage is found at delivery.
