You get a dedicated infrared searing zone on one part of the grill while using the remaining burners for standard grilling, roasting, or holding temperature. This is how most cooks use the setup — sear on the IR zone, finish on a lower-heat standard burner.

Most cooks install it in one of the outer burner positions so the searing zone is at one end of the grill and the remaining standard burners are available for lower-heat cooking on the other end. This gives you a clear separation between the high-heat sear zone and the rest of the cooking surface. The specific slot is ultimately a matter of your cooking workflow — there is no wrong position functionally, but the outer slot is the most common preference.
