In bumper pool, where carom shots off both rail cushions and bumper posts are central to every strategy, the consistency of K-66 gum rubber matters significantly: planned rebound angles actually execute as intended, rather than varying unpredictably as softer or cheaper compounds do.

The table itself is 54 inches long and 39 inches wide. Bumper pool is played with 48-inch cues — considerably shorter than the 57-inch cues used for standard pool. When a ball is sunk into the goal cup at either end of the table, it travels through an internal channel and is returned to an access panel on the side of the table (15 inches wide by 3.5 inches high). The carpet lining inside the ball return channel absorbs the impact and sound of returning balls, significantly reducing the clatter noise of bare plastic return tracks. The 10 bumper posts are solid chrome-plated steel — 1.5 inches in diameter and 1.625 inches tall. Each post is topped with a 2.25-inch diameter, 1/2-inch thick high-quality rubber bumper cap. Replacement bumper caps are available separately from Hathaway: part number NGP2322 for red bumpers and NGP2323 for white bumpers. This means that if a bumper wears or is damaged over time, you can replace individual caps rather than the entire table.

Each player shoots five balls of their color (red or white) from their end of the table, aiming to sink them into the cup at the far end. The first shot must be made from a specific starting position, and players alternate turns. A player may continue shooting as long as they sink a ball on their turn. If a player sinks an opponent's ball, it is placed back on the table. Balls must enter the cup in proper sequence and from the correct approach as determined by house rules — bumper pool has several common rule variants, so it's worth agreeing on rules before your first game.
