Players on both sides need to move freely along the rod handles, so you need clear space on the long sides of the table. A room approximately 9 ft × 9.5 ft provides comfortable clearance, though this should be confirmed against your actual layout.

Thinner rods flex and vibrate when you spin or strike the ball, which bleeds energy out of your shot and makes the game feel imprecise. The Primo's 5/8-in chrome-plated solid steel rods are rigid enough to transfer your wrist movement directly to the player with no wasted flex. Paired with E-Z spin bearings — which reduce the friction between the rod and the cabinet side panel — the result is fast, smooth player rotation that responds immediately to your input.

A counterbalanced player has its weight distributed so that when you release the rod, the player returns to a neutral (vertical or slightly angled) position rather than flopping forward or backward under gravity. This matters because it keeps the player in a legal playing position when your hand is off the rod — preventing accidental blocking and giving you more deliberate control over where the player is aimed when you shoot or pass. Non-counterbalanced players flop to one side and become passive obstacles; counterbalanced ones are active, positionable tools.

Cross support braces run underneath the playfield between the side panels, preventing the playing surface from bowing or sagging in the middle under normal use and weight. A warped or bowed playfield creates dead spots and high points where the ball rolls unpredictably — an invisible disadvantage that most players don't realize they're dealing with. The Primo's cross-supported design keeps the surface flat and true, so the game plays consistently from end to end.

When a goal is scored, the ball passes through the goal opening into an end ball catcher, which routes it into a ball runner along the side of the table. The ball then travels back to the ball launcher on the side of the table — a two-piece mechanism that lets the serving player drop the ball onto the playfield to restart play. The side ball catchers along the long walls collect balls that leave play from the sides. This keeps the game moving without having to reach under the table or reset manually after every goal.

Yes. The Primo accommodates 2–4 players. In a 2-player game, each player controls all the rods on their side of the table. In a 4-player game, two players per side split the rods — typically one player handles the attacking rods (3-player and 5-player) while the other handles defense (2-player and goalie). The solid wood handles make it comfortable to hold multiple rods simultaneously in 2-player mode.

Hathaway rates assembly at approximately 80 minutes. The only tool you need to supply is a Phillips head screwdriver — a hex wrench is included in the hardware pack. Two adults are recommended, particularly for the step that requires flipping the assembled cabinet upright. Yes. The Primo includes four large independent leg levelers with rubber feet — one on each leg. Yes. Hathaway specifies indoor use only. The E-Z spin bearings require occasional lubrication to maintain their smooth, low-friction action. Apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the rod at the bearing contact points — do not use WD-40 or petroleum-based lubricants, which can degrade plastic components and attract dust. Wipe the chrome rods down periodically to remove chalk dust and debris. The playfield surface can be cleaned with a dry or lightly damp cloth; avoid harsh cleaners that can strip the paint or marking lines.
